Holman Sterling, Designer: Kim Holman, Builder: Uphams of Brixham, Year: 1961, Location Hants, Length on deck: 28'5, Beam: 8'6, Draft: 4'8, Tonnage(TM): 7TM, £20,500, REF: 8403, Full Specification, Wooden Ships Comments, The Sterling was one of Kim Holmans many successful designs and was effectively the cruising version of the Twister. They are the same length on deck but slightly larger in the beam and fuller in the bilge giving more space below decks, the Thames Tonnage is a clear indicator that the Sterling was designed to be a more comfortable and spacious boat, the trade off being the performance which is not quite up to the sparkling standards of the Twister. This boat was built by Uphams of Brixham in 1961 and has been in present very experienced ownership since 1998, in which time she has been sailed both single handed and with a crew, exploring the coast and harbours around the Solent and the South East fo England. The owner has carried out extensive work including a strip out and refit of the interior, new engine, rigging and sails. One of the best examples of a Sterling that will be found. Construction, Hull, Planked in pitch pine below the water line, mahogany above, all splined from new. Copper rivet fastened to steamed American rock elm frames, 1 ½? x 1 1/8? at 7? centres. Galvanised strap floors with galvanised bolts, all in tidy condition. External iron ballast keel with iron keel bolts. all bolts replaced in 1999, 3 drawn in 2011 at which time one was replaced. Decks and Cockpit, Marine plywood deck, cascover sheathed and painted with 2-pack paint with a non-slip finish. Varnished mahogany toe rail all round with galvanised stanchions mounted on wooden pads and bolted through the deck. Stainless steel deck and stemhead fittings with twin chain rollers. Self-draining cockpit constructed of sheathed marine plywood with varnished mahogany thwarst and a scrubbed teak cockpit sole grating. full set of cockpit seat cushions. Tiller steering. Superstructure, Varnished mahogany coachroof coamings with bronze portholes. Coachroof deck is cascover sheathed plywood, varnished hand rails with stainless mounts. Mast is in a steel tabernacle mounted on the coachroof deck. Rig ? Masthead Bermudan Sloop. Deck stepped alloy mast in a steel tabernacle with very adequate support beneath. Slab reefing varnished pine boom with lazy jacks and a stack pack system for ease of handling the mainsail with a small crew. Stainless steel standing rigging, all replaced 2011, to internal s/s chainplates. Single spreader rig with single cap shroud and twin lower stays, twin standing backstays. Sails, Mainsail. Machinery, Engine, Beta BD722 20hp 3 cyl diesel installed new in 2003. Aquadrive coupling to a centreline stainless shaft and 3 blade bronze propellor. Cruising speed 5kts, max 6 kts. Batteries, 2 x 12 volt batteries for engine start and domestics, Battery charging by alternator and Rutland 504 windvane. Tanks, 14.5 gallon stainless fuel tank located in the port cockpit locker. Water separator filter mounted on the bulkhead. 25 gallon stainless water tank under the saloon cabin sole, Accommodation, Berths, 5 berths including a starboard quarter berth, 2 saloon settee berths and twin V berths in the forepeak which create a double. Saloon, The interior has been totally stripped back to bare wood and re-painted, all upholstery renewed and some of the original design features modified to make better use of the space. Varnished mahogany slats on the inside of the hull with a number of shelves and storage areas under the side decks. A single step down onto the engine box from the companionway hatch with the galley to port and chart desk over the quarter berth to starboard. Scrubbed teak cabin sole boards. The design of the Sterling allows for an ample amount of headroom and a wide cabin sole meaning the saloon is spacious and comfortable. Full length settee berths with trotter boxes. Centreline passageway going forward with the heads compartment to port and a hanging locker to starboard, Heads, Heads compartment to port with a Jabsco large bowl sea toilet discharges directly overboard with new pipework. Hand basin in the heads compartment also drains overboard. Galley, Simple galley arrangement with a Plastimo 2 burner stove with grill set on a gimbal. Situated under the new worktop which hinges up to allow use of the stove and when down gives a large flat work surface. Storage lockers beneath the side decks.
