What are sailing boats?
Sailing boats are sports boats mainly driven by wind power and optional driven by additional motor power. The expert calls bigger variants with more than one mast sailing ships. Sailing boats could be subdivide by different characteristics. A typical classification is by "weight stability" (yachts) or "shape stability" (jolly boats) as well as a classification by single or multiple hull. Sailing yachts normally are single hull boats, united by a strong, mostly ballast weighted keel. This cause a centre of gravity below the waterline. The weight of the keel stables the yachts, so it is called "weight stabilty".
Which types of sailing boats are there?
Catamarans and Trimarans - Highspeed on the open sea.
Probably the Polynesians invented the ancient catamaran thousands of years ago and travel the Pacific with it. In contrast to classical sailing yachts with a single hull catamarans and trimarans have two and three hulls. But flatter and lighter hulls so that these boats are faster than classical sailing yachts. Multihulls are often used as racing yachts and reach very high speeds because of the aerodynamic construction.
Jolly boats - perfectly for your short trip.
Jolly boats are small and manoeuvrable sailing boats. Jolly boats react to the lightest movements and are sailable in a fast and sporting way. Mostly it don't have a fixed keel, but a liftable centreboard which could be lift or lower at need. Unlike sailing yachts jolly boats have no weight stability, but shape stability. That means the stabilization to a certain degree occurs because of the ramping torque of the displaced water, not because of the weight of a keel. The lack of a keel makes jolly boats smoothly operating and faster than sailing yachts, but also a little less stable in the water and more prone to capsize. Because of that it's main range of application is inland water and more windless offshore areas. It's not suitable for the heavy seas of an ocean.
The "classical" sailing boat
Keel boats - it includes sailing yachts too - are sailing boats with or without cabin, depending on size and use. Small, open keel boats starting with a length about five meters for two, three or four yachtsmen. Large sailing yachts are able to accommodate larger crews. Keel boats offer a wide selection of equipment and using options. Open keel boats are suitable for daily outings (because of that it is called daysailor sometimes) on larger lakes or offshore. Yachts with cabin are suitable for longer journeys with several overnight stays.
